Wine Barrel Carving Process
Step Six - Removing the Background
Using
a sweep gouge, I carefully carve some oak away from outside of the design.
The chisel cuts up to the V groove, which stops the wood from carving further.
A straight edge chisel then severs the chips at the edge of the design. The cuts are repeated again and again until I reach the depth of the background desired. Although relatively simple, this is an extremely time intensive process.
To the right, hours and hours and hours later - the background has been removed, now it is time to carve the design, adding depth and dimension to the barrel carving.
Step Seven - Adding details and dimension.
