Wine barrel head boards are about 1" thick, but joined with dowel.  By carving too deep, you chance hitting a pocket which would ruin the work.  For that reason, shallow relief carving is required.  Notice on the detail how Tom slightly undercuts the horse and lettering to make them stand out from the background.  This was also Tom's first attempt at a Carousel horse.  Notice the detail on the flowers decorating the horse.  The mane and tail were also carved at different levels to give more depth to the hair.  Although this picture does not pick up on the mane detail, look closely at the tail and you will see the levels.
