Tasting Room Sign - Blue Grass Cooperage

You are looking at the interior of a barrel head.  Wine stained the wood, and accounts for the deep burgundy you see.  This barrel head contained the cooperage brand and the design would have destroyed the mark.  To keep the cooperage branding intact, Tom decided to carve on the wine stained side of the barrel head.  Perhaps because the wood is charred, and then soaks in wine for several years, the inside oak carved like a piece of steel.  The oak was brittle on the surface which required extra care to make certain the wood didn't chip at the design.  Tom gave the sign a faux gold leaf lettering and sealed the surface with polyurethane to finish the work.  This is Tom's first and last interior barrel head carving.
